Egyptian Islamic philosopher and scholar Ali Abd al-Raziq dies. Author of Islam and the Foundations of Governance, al-Raziq is best known for being an early and leading proponent of secularism and the separation of religion and government.

Ali Abd al-Raziq was not himself personally secular, nor did he advocate irreligion on a personal level. Instead, he argued that separating religion from government would be best for both: Islam would not abused by politicians and politics would be freed from the dictates of religious leaders.
