The U.S. Senate votes 99-0 to confirm Sandra Day O'Connor to be the first female justice on the U.S. Supreme Court. For the most part senators praise her nomination, but there is concern that she is insufficiently anti-abortion for the tastes of conservatives.

Practical opposition fades away, though, when Senator Jesse Helms (R-SC) announces that he will vote to confirm her. Even though he doesn't know exactly where O'Connor stands on abortion and Roe v. Wade, he says he has "faith in the president."
