The Science Committee of the California Curriculum Commission adopts stringent new science standards that ban the teaching of the biblical story of creation in science classes.

New science textbooks will be based on these standards.

Michael Hudson of People for the American Way says:

"The committee left no doubt that evolution is a central theory in life sciences and is to be covered. And religious belief, which certainly has its place in social science curriculum, is not science and should not be included in science textbooks."

Rev. Louis Sheldon, leader of the Traditional Values Coalition, says:

"They are censoring, allowing only one viewpoint and making it compelling. Once it's compelling, it's a de facto religion."
