In Charlotte, North Carolina, Jim Bakker takes the stand in his own defense during his federal trial on fraud charges. He testifies for about three hours and tries to portray himself as a simple Christian minister who has been trying to fulfill a divine call.

Jim Bakker tells the jury:

"I think fund raising was my most burdensome job, it never left me. You never get away from the pressure that you have to raise funds for the next week, the next month, and the next year."

According to government prosecutors, Jim Bakker massively oversold "lifetime partnerships" which were supposed to come with three free nights each year for life at the Heritage USA theme park in Fort Mills, South Carolina.

They say that PTL not only failed to build enough units to provide the necessary lodging, but in fact never really intended to, instead directing the donations intended for the partnerships to daily operating expenses and large bonuses for Bakker and top aides.
