The Freedom From Religion Foundation files a lawsuit against a Denver monument to the 1993 visit by Pope John Paul II as part of World Youth Day.

According to the lawsuit, it was unconstitutional for the Department of Natural Resources to use tax funds to build and maintain the monument, located on Butterfly Hill where Pope John Paul II celebrated mass.

Julie Wells, a local member of the FFRF, says:

"In effect, the defendants have erected a shrine and have made this area consecrated land."
