Iranian President Mohammad Khatami, currently in New York City to attend the U.N. General Assembly, tells reporters that as far as he is concerned, the Rushdie affair is "completely finished" and shouldn't be an issue anymore.

This strongly implies that Salman Rushdie should no longer have to fear for his life, but that isn't quite stated directly.

Mohammad Khatami says:

"We should consider the Salman Rushdie issue as completely finished.

From now on, rather than the war of civilizations, we want to promote the dialogue of civilizations, and we hope we have entered the era of dialogue."
